Generally speaking, anytime you’re in pain, it’s an emergency. Below are some common situations that require emergency dental care:
- Your tooth has been broken or knocked out.
- Your tooth has fallen out for no apparent reason. This may indicate advanced gum disease.
- You have a soft tissue injury such as a cut to your tongue, lip, cheek, or gums.
- A dental restoration such as a crown or bridge has been damaged or loosened.
- You experience severe dental pain, especially when chewing.
- Your mouth is bleeding and it doesn’t stop within a reasonable amount of time. If the bleeding is severe, you should go directly to the emergency room.
If you’re experiencing any of the above situations, carefully follow these instructions:
- Call our office as soon as possible. We will work hard to see you the same day if at all possible.
- Stabilize any loose teeth. If a tooth has been knocked loose, gently push it back into place. Don’t apply excessive pressure, as doing so may cause additional damage or pain.
- Don’t touch the root of the tooth. If your tooth has been detached from your gums completely, be careful to pick it up by the crown (visible white part). We may be able to place the tooth back in your mouth, but only if the roots are not damaged and you see us in time. Put the tooth into a small container of milk or saline and bring it to the office with you.
- Follow any instructions our office gives you. When you talk to a member of our team, they will likely give you steps to take until you see Dr. Murmann.
